Piyanko
Piyanko village is located in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The Village is a rural settlement and the major source of living for community members are farming and trading.
Findings from our need’s assessment revealed that
- Piyanko LEA Primary school had two classrooms, with old furniture and no sanitary facilities or library.
- The community lacked a clinic, so community members resorted to herbal medicines or traveled long distances to seek medical attention
- Many women were not financially empowered, and unable to contribute to their basic needs
- The sports team had worn out sports kits with little motivation to play sports.
Piyanko Community was the first to receive intervention in our five focus areas
Education
Dunes Foundation provided the L.E.A primary school with six well-furnished classrooms, a library stocked with textbooks and learning aids, toilet facilities, an admin office, and a cafeteria. The children were also provided with uniforms, shoes, and school bags. After the school renovations, there was an increase in school enrollment from 90 students to 215 students.
Water
Dunes Foundation provided water to the primary school, by sinking a borehole to provide clean and accessible water for students and staff.Women Empowerment
We implemented our Microcredit Program for women who wanted to start up, sustain or expand their businesses. The interest-free loans were made accessible to nine (9) women who were expected to pay back the loans every month.Sports
A football tournament was conducted between PiyankoPikolo Football Academy and Dunes FC, with football matches conducted at Piyanko community and Dunes Foundation. Football kits were provided for the players at Pikolo Football Academy.
According to the Pikolo Football Academy Coach, the football tournament led to many joining the football academy which prompted the creation of a Junior and senior team.
Health
A clinic was built to improve the health outcomes of Piyanko Community members. The Clinic had a doctor’s office, a maternity bed, a store, and a toilet. The clinic was also stocked with drugs needed to provide first aid treatment to patients.
